Topic - Introductions and Welcome Date Posted: 2006-07-29 by: JapsHi, I'm Japs from Subic Bay Philippines. As an event organizer, my group has been drawn into cheer & dance competition (popularly named cheerdance here in the Philippines) sad to sayschool coaches/Physical Education teachers & their cheerdance groups have no idea about the basic mechanics of cheerleading & gymnastics. Nevertheless, my event group have set the competition on Sept 24 in observance of what our area's existing cheerleaders can bring... We're glad to have browsed the web ang lead me to this page... hoping some of coaches/professionals might visit our country and have a seminar/s to my country's cheerleading dilema.... =)

Reply - Date: 2006-07-20 by: nicole Hi sheri
my name is Nicole i was a cheerleader all my life. And in high school i remember always looking and thinking of new ideas to bring our school together since i have finished school. I have returned to my old high school and coach. Every team is diffrent but.... i think one of the best things i have done is have a code of conduct plan that i have set for my girls with what i want from them. So if something is to ever happend you will always have that to fall back on...Also think of cute ideas to bring all the teams together remeber to let your girls know that they are cheerleaders that means they cheer on all the school teams not just the football or basketball teams...( if a team has a big game that day like they are playing the minutmen you could have your cheerleaders make little clocks and hang up in the school in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms the night before the big game....have one of the cheerleaders in the morning get on the loud speaker and tell the students that all day they need to loook for these clocks and once they find em to write there name on the back and have a boxs in area for the students to put them in at luch u can draw a name and they can get in free or a free school t-shirt ...) it really brings the school together .....other ides is at the end of the day of a big game that night have to band play your fight song threw the halls of the school to get everyone pummed up....well hope that helped good luck!!! |
Reply - Date: 2006-10-12 by: Paige Good luck, but remember that safety is most important. I suggest taking AACCA and NCSSE courses to bone up on the current safety of the sport. Also word of advise is do not let the squad coach themselves. They need a coach! Have fun! |

We are trying to get them from a local sports store, not a catalog, so some shoes are not available. Any suggestions? I've been looking at Nike and Kaepa, but I'm open for anything. Contact me at amccheeranddance@hotmail.com or www.amccheeranddance.com and let me know the process of promoting my clinic. thanks
Reply - Date: 2006-06-12 by: Valerie Ninemire, Editor Hi,
Try posting again and see what happens. I believe we were experiencing some problems the other day and I know my first attempt at replying to you did not go through. One thing though, your post will not appear automatically, due to some problems we've had in the past, all posts have to approved before they appear. So, try again and I'll be watching for the approval message and I'll see that your message gets up. Good luck with the clinic and thanks for your patience.

Topic - Introductions and Welcome Date Posted: 2006-05-22 by: Becky LewisI am the cheer coach at our school. We are a very small school and do not have a football team so most of the young girls do not have the opportunity to see cherleaders perform. I want to have a mini-cheer camp for grades Pre-K- 5th grade but I do not have a clue of how to get started. Can anyone share their ideas PLEASE?!
Reply - Date: 2007-08-20 by: Brooke Hi! I come from a small school without a cheer program for elem. or middle schoolers. We started a summer school cheer program for girls ages 3rd grade through 8th. We teach them the basics of cheering, a dance, a handful of cheers, and some basic stunting. We have high school and alumni cheerleaders help coach- about 1 cheerleader for every 6 girls or so. This class runs Mon.-Fri. in June, and at one of the first high school Football games, they get to cheer along with the highschoolers and perform their dance. They also have a little competition at the end of their class. So basically, you would start it up the way any other summer school class would be, if you have that kind of program. Otherwise, you could set it up privately. You could advertise it in the local newspapers and basically just get the word out- you're from a small town, you know what i mean, hehe. If you would like to know more about how we ran the class or anything, feel free to ask. |

Topic - Introductions and Welcome Date Posted: 2006-05-02 by: MelissaHi! I am currently coaching at the grade school level. The school is very, very small and we have been trying to introduce cheerleading for the past couple of years. The girls have been catching on well, but I am having problems teaching them proper form on certain things (kicks, jumps, good attitudes) because the previous coach taught them to kick or jump however they felt like doing it. Does anyone know how to better teach this? I am
Reply - Date: 2006-09-20 by: Linda What I have done is: Show them how they look doing kicks, then I do them the right way. I ask them what they think looks better. They usually tell me my way, and then they change what they are doing. I will have them hold a position, if it is incorrect ( I ask for permission) then I move them to the correct position. Good Luck. |

We are thinking of french breads for a change. Some don't like it. I was wondering if any one ever did french braids and if they ever had problems with them. Did the judges like them?
Reply - Date: 2006-10-17 by: Rachel Edgerton In the southeast the trend has become straight hair, half up. Comments tend to be that french braids are great for young kids, but look to child like for senior age teams. |

Topic - Coaching Questions or Problems Date Posted: 2006-09-14 by: ChelseaI started coaching this year at a small high school. Three years ago, this squad showed a lot of potential -- they still do.
In the past 2 years, after they lost a good coach, the cheerleading program at this school has been more of an after-school pep club (with "coaches" who knew nothing about cheerleading), dwindling to 2 members by the end of last year.
This year, with two new coaches, we have about 15 girls -- an amazing turnout for this tiny school. There is obviously a lot of inexperience, so we've been going over the absolute basics, but there are about 4 who are experienced and find our practices boring and redundant. They have't said so, and they're incredibly cooperative and have amazing attitudes, but I just know that deep down they want to begin practicing at the level they're capable of.
Yesterday we went over stunting basics and I mixed up the stunt groups to include experienced and inexperienced girls. I'm so proud of my experienced girls for their patience and cooperation, but I feel like they must be frustrated with only lifting to a half.
How can I give attention to each of the various skill levels we have on our team while still trying to close the noticeable skill gap between the members?
Reply - Date: 2006-11-15 by: Andrea McBride Hi! I have been coaching for 10 years now. The first thing I learned as an assistant coach was to NOT spread out your experienced stunters. If you keep your experienced kids together, then your inexperienced kids WILL catch on more quickly because they will have something to base their progress on. (oh, THATS how it looks...)
Definitely use your experienced bases to help train your new flyers and use your experienced flyers to help new bases. The kids are extremely insightful and they can tell you when something feels "funny" so you can quickly determine the problems the new kids are having. But if you keep your experienced kids together then you'll at least have that many extensions, libs, etc. 1 lib is better than none!
Pyramids are GREAT too! When they can brace--SAFELY without pulling each other down--then the whole team feels like they accomplished something hard, even if it was as simple as two elevators bracing a prep level lib that extends after the brace. Trust me, they will feel better about their two elevators on the side of a solid extension, than three shaky elevators in a row.
They will progress FAST if you let each group move at their own pace...some will move more quickly, but they usually get fairly evened out within a few months. Hope this helps!! |

Topic - Coaching Questions or Problems Date Posted: 2006-06-28 by: Tawnia St.AmantI have been coaching for five years. I have recently been named head coach. Last year a cheerleader on both the junior high and JV squad suffered concussions. Also, at camp a varsity squad member received a concussion. This year we had another concussion. We use mats and spotters and practice safely. We use progressions and only move on if it is safe. However, sometimes things happen. Does anyone have advice on how to prevent this? I have been involved in cheerleading and competitive cheerleading for 16 years, and I have safety certifications. However, I don't know what else to do. Please help!

Topic - Coaching Questions or Problems Date Posted: 2006-04-16we need attitude Help please! Is anyone else in this position? Our gym is a small one. We have 4 major All-Star gyms located within a 10 mile area of us, so getting kids to come into a new gym like ours is difficult. Most of the so called "super cheerleaders" are already attending one of the other gyms. Our teams problem is not in the area of tumbling or stunting, but rather showmanship and attitude. The kids have the ability to dance and tumble, and motions are very good. They just seem ashamed or embarrassed to move their bodies. The look like they "hold back" so to speak. They are stiff when they dance. Is there any way to teach them to relax and kinda let themselves go? They just don't seem to put any personality into their routine. They just go thru the motions. Is "performing to a crowd" a skill that can be taught or is it all a matter of the convidence of each child?? I really need help. This problem is going to be the downfall of our team I'm afraid. We don't mind bringing in a professional to help, but just don't know where to turn to find one.
Reply - Date: 2006-04-16 Showmanship Problem When you describe your gym it sounds as though your teams certainly have the main ingredience to be champions... except for passion and desire. Although your team has the physical attributes to tumble, stunt and dance, it sounds as though they lack the mental toughness to complete themselves as cheer athletes.
The emotions of passion and desire are linked directly to their mental toughness. This is the dividing line between those that win and those who dream of winning. Those with mental toughness have discipline to follow through. The coach creates the vision and the path to get there. The winning athlete will training with passion because they have a desire to achieve and win.
Sorry for getting too deep. Let me simplify this:
If you were able to get a nationally televised program (MTV) or a new movie production from Paramount to use your teams for the scenes involving a cheer competition. There level of desire would increase by multiples. They would perform each scene with passion and precision. They would rise to the occassion to be nationally recognized.
What they need to realize is they will get media attention by being champions. It may start in local papers and local TV, but that may escalate to ESPN, USA News, CNN and various national cheer publications.
Create the vision for your teams... and show them the path.

Reply - Date: 2006-08-14 by: Heather Randolph Maybe try to work on their talents of observation, what makes one team more exciting than the other? If they could watch another competition, or tapes of a competition you could train them to observe what others are doing better. That is a good skill for life as well. Cheerleading is very precise. It could be that they are caught up in the precision of it. Maybe they need to have their moves down solidly before they can go on to show personality? From what you said I think that you feel a great deal of pressure to perform. Remember that having fun is as important as winning awards. Kids will have their whole lives to work. Maybe concentrate on the fun aspects of cheerleading, and let the "superstars" grind away at the other schools. Kids will want to come to yours becase its fun, it teaches good values, provides structure and there is commaderie. Once kids have more fun, they will be happier and show that spirit to the audience. Then you can work on getting better, together. |

Topic - Coaching Questions or Problems Date Posted: 2006-04-16Cheerleading Tryouts I coach at the high school level. Normally we have tryouts in the spring for the following year. Our athletic director would like to see tryouts being held when all the other regular season sports hold their tryouts. So football cheerleading tryouts would be in August and basketball and competition tryouts in November. I can't think of a reason to go this route. Is anyone else doing this? If so how do you handle going to camp in the summer do you take your post season squad?
Thanks
Reply - Date: 2006-04-22 by: Diana Holding tryouts in the Fall was a disaster for my squad last year. Our uniforms didn't get in until the last football game of the season. We rushed to learn our competition routine and the girls never really bonded that well. I don't recommend waiting, you need camp time, and practice time. |
Reply - Date: 2006-08-30 by: Kim Explain tot he athletic director that allcheerleading prep activities begin in the summer, including camps. Let her know the importance of the camp time and that they aren't offered later in the year. Also, it takes more than a month to teach a bunch of kids 30+ cheers, numerous dances, a fight song, and an entire competition routine. You're supposed to be supporting the other teams at your school, so asking you to shorten your prep time hurts not only your squad, but the other teams as well. |

Topic - Coaching Questions or Problems Date Posted: 2006-04-16tumbling mats I just took over a squad that as a whole is new to cheering. We are starting from the ground up and would like to start stunting and tumbling. As a former cheerleader I know safety comes first! We are in need of cheer mats but coming from a small private school have very limited funds. Can anyone refer me to a company that has a low cost high quality mat? How large of an area should we cover for a group of 10 girls? We plan on numerous fundraisers to help fund our new squad and mats are going to wipe out our resources before the year even begins. What are some fundraisers that have worked for your squad?
Reply - Date: 2006-08-14 by: Heather Randolph What type of mats are you looking for. I'm not in cheerleading but I have been looking into the carpet bonded foam for my martial arts dojo, as well as mats. I know you can pick up carpet bonded foam, slightly used, at competitions that use it. Some companies even have it in storage at the facility if it was not sold at the time of the competition. Contact Dee at Ross. As far as regular, folding mats, AK Athletics Factory has the least expensive mats and shipping charge is unbeliveable, and they can make you mats to order. Unfortunately for me, I came close to getting one roll of carpet bonded foram that was in storage here in Boston but a rock climbing company had been promised it if they needed all 20 rolls, and they did need all 20. So close but yet so far. We need mats to practice with too, yet limited funds. Hope this helps! |
